For 2024 Duane and Dan are focusing on Marvel history that centers on Daredevil, and Siena and Dan are keeping up with current happenings in the Marvel Comics Universe. Our previous seasons are also available here: Phases of the Moon Knight covered the Moon Knight character in comics and TV, and our MCU Review saw us comparing the Phase 1 thru Phase 4 Marvel Cinematic Universe films with the comics that inspired them. 2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics
What If vol 1 #5
Duane's first What If Story
In continuity but not really
Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes don't die in WWII and continue to crime fight back at home
Buck Barnes takes over for Steve Rogers and Rogers becomes the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Kinda jarring to read (it isn't suppose to happen this way!)
Often Re-enforces the idea of canon events
Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame Prelude #1-3
Comic book adaptation of a MCU movie that's an adaptation of a comic book(s) story arc
Panels were pulled right from the movie - both in look and dialogue
Art is good, but something is missing
Missing the impact...
Hard to recommend
Guardians of the Galaxy #1-6
Explores the idea of a universe without Thanos
Except it isn't...
New version of the Guardians includes some unexpected characters
Beta Ray Bill!!!
Gamora and Peter are going through things and Rocket is MIA
Eros aka Starfox - should have seen it coming
Hela a stand-in for Death?

This Week's Stack
Marvel Super-Heroes #13
Ms. Marvel #1
Avengers #200
Uncanny X-Men #164
Captain Marvel (2012) #1-6
2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics
Marvel Super-Heroes #13
Carol starts as a woman in a position of power. Unusual for the time.
Ends up as a potential love interest of Mar-Vell, much like Lois Lane was to Superman at the time.
Ms. Marvel #1
Carol’s new look and attitude very much based on Gloria Steinem, who also co-founded Ms. Magazine (featuring Wonder Woman on the first issue).
The callback to 1940s Captain Marvel was a nice touch
Quickly got her memory issues sorted out. Changed costume in #19. Series ended with #23.
Spider-Man and Mary Jane cameos
Duane is not a fan of the black-outs and how this story hints at what is obviously going on.
Avengers #200
Lots of writers and yet...
Super messed up. Very weird and sexist. No idea what the writers were trying to accomplish, but nothing about this story sat right.
Almost immediately this story was recognized to be super messed up.
Chris Claremont tried to fix things a bit in Avengers Annual #10 by giving Carol a chance to lay into the team
Uncanny X-Men #164
The Brood are the worst. Look very much like the alien from Alien or the Gorn on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
New powers are radiation based, and are top-notch. Makes her one of the most powerful people in the Marvel Universe.
Had been with the X-Men since Prof X helped her get her memories back
Captain Marvel (2012) #1-6
Saved the best for last
Standing on the shoulders of two giants - the previous Captain Marvels and earlier female pilots
Ultimately Danvers herself gets to decide if she wants to keep the life she has (with powers) or change her fate and go without. Very Empowering
The new costume: https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-marvel-got-new-costume-bet/

Wasp (2023) #1-4

2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics
Black Goliath #1-5
Series just sort of ends.
The tragic life of a comic collector. Sometimes stories weren’t finished properly, or at all. Cancellations happened all too regularly.
New to being Goliath. Wasn't fairing very well but kept at it
Balancing being a scientist and being a hero.
LATER… Casual sex and casual misogyny.
Marvel Team-Up #59 and #60
Team Up books. What and why?
Quick moving story with surprising depth
The Wasp’s powers
Yellowjacket dead... Until he isn't
Claremont and Byrne
Hank and Janet don't have the best relationship even here
Wasp #1-4
Respecting the original origin and stories, but updating and expanding them
Art style is very bright and clean. Manga-influenced in style and storytelling.
Jarvis has a big role
Janet in this series feels like Hope Van Dyne from the MCU

COMICS OVER TIME
Comics Over Time is a weekly podcast where our hosts Dan and Duane read important and interesting comic books that provided characters and story ideas for movies or TV. Then we'll watch how those stories were translated to the big (or small) screen.
We have a lot of great comics, movies and TV shows lined up to share with you. Whether you are a long-time fan of comic books and comic book movies, or are just getting started, we invite you to join us as we look back at the history of these characters and their stories, as well as attempt to connect the dots from comic panels to moving pictures.
