Comics Over Time

Each week Dan, Duane and Siena bring you a look at comics new and old! Since 2021 we have been discussing comics, TV and film. For 2024 Duane and Dan are focusing on Marvel history that centers on Daredevil, and Siena and Dan are keeping up with current happenings in the Marvel Comics Universe. Our previous seasons are also available here: Phases of the Moon Knight covered the Moon Knight character in comics and TV, and our MCU Review saw us comparing the Phase 1 thru Phase 4 Marvel Cinematic Universe films with the comics that inspired them. COMIC CONNECTIONS: Moon Knight - Last Days of Moon Knight
Thursday Dec 21, 2023
Thursday Dec 21, 2023
Episode 75 - Moon Knight - Last Days of Moon Knight
We have known this day was coming, but it still seems like it snuck up on me. Issue 30 of Moon Knight came out this past Wednesday, meaning that we not only got the final issue of this run, but also saw the Last Days of Moon Knight come to a close with him suffering a fiery and heroic death.
**Spoiler Warning**
This Week's Stack
Moon Knight (2021-2023) #25-30
Issue Recaps and Discussion Topics
Moon Knight (2021-2023) #25-30
25 - 72 pages of NEW story. Frustratingly expensive for an in-series issue
26 - We learn Badr's first name: Yehya. Also, His last resurrection went badly, and he is losing control, with the “chorus” of Fists past taking control of him occasionally
27 - This is a comic book way for the hero to get much needed information about the villian
28 - 8-Ball a key member of the team?
29 - Lot of action. MK beats one Black Spectre but another reveals himself, shoots Marc and shows himself to be someone we know
30 - Marc saves the day, but pays the price
Moon Knight goes from featuring many people in one body to featuring many bodies to represent one hero.
Is 8-Ball really a good guy now?
Is Zodiac actually now the big bad?
Closure upon closure
Cappuccio finishes the run in style
Where is this run in the history of Moon Knight?
Final Thoughts

COMIC CONNECTIONS: Moon Knight - City of the Dead
Wednesday Dec 13, 2023
Wednesday Dec 13, 2023
Episode 74 - Moon Knight - City of the Dead
This week we are continue our look at recent Moon Knight series. First up we dive into issues number 21-24 of the currently Moon Knight comic, and then its on to the 5-issue limited series City of the Dead, where we see the comic debut of a character fans of the TV show are already very familiar with.
This Week's Stack
Moon Knight (2021-2023) #21-24
Moon Knight: City of the Dead (2023) #1-5
Issue Recaps and Discussion Topics
Moon Knight (2021-2023) #21-24
21 - The Reese issue (with a Jake cameo)
22 - Follow the money
22 - This is when he’s happy
23 - Resolution through non-violence
24 - Morpheus enters The Big Sleep courtesy of Black Spectre
24 – He tries to give Mark, Steven and Jake some peace before he goes
Moon Knight: City of the Dead (2023) #1-5
Cross-pollination – New characters starting in TV or movies and then making the jump to comics is still unusual, but is happening more.
This feels very much like something Doug Moench might have written. Reminds me a bit of Vol 3’s “The Resurrection War.” See our PotMK episode entitled “It Turns Out He Was Only Mostly Dead” for more on that.
A lot of character narration over the action. Characters introduced themselves every issue.
Do all faiths end up in the Duat in the Marvel universe? This I do not understand.
It also seems weird that there are cars and modern cities.
This is a bit of a “greatest hits” album, bringing back almost all of MKs old foes – or at least the truly villainous ones. No Scarlett, for instance. Legion of the Unliving is quite the name.
It’s always Randall when you least expect it!
We have a Khonshu sighting
Also is a bit weird, in that it finishes with Layla saying “Be Seeing you, Marc.” Will she?? On Earth? Or back in the Duat?
I think Lyla is back on earth. Resurrected for her help defeating Jackal Knight Randall
What’s up with him just completely forgetting about the fact he has a girlfriend? Greer deserves better than this guy.

Avengers (1992) #346
Captain Marvel (volume 8 - 2014) #9
Ms Marvel (2014) #1-5
Photon (2022) #1-5
2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics
Silver Surfer (1991) #53 and Avengers (1992) #346
Dar-Benn is another character that is very thinly developed
Dar-Benn’s presence would seem to hint at power struggles within the Kree Empire as a major reason for the conflict in The Marvels
Captain Marvel #9
Sort of an inverted “Save the princess” story. Weird, though.
Lila Cheney! Has been around for decades. Started in New Mutants.
The prince is a bit of a two-dimensional character. Noble and idealistic with chiseled abs. Could be the Captain Marvel equivalent of Moon Knight’s Arthur Harrow.
Ms Marvel (2014) #1-5
Very lighthearted and delivered with no cynicism or snark
A really interesting insight into modern life for a Pakistani-American family
Good is not a thing you are. It’s a thing you do.
Photon (2022) #1-5
What a weird comic story
Lots of movement, but almost no action
Does revisit many eras of Photon’s life, and seems to be trying to act as a reintroduction of the character. Feels like it is trying to do for Monica Rambeau what the 2012 Captain Marvel series did for Carol Danvers

COMICS OVER TIME
Comics Over Time is a weekly podcast where our hosts Dan and Duane read important and interesting comic books that provided characters and story ideas for movies or TV. Then we'll watch how those stories were translated to the big (or small) screen.
We have a lot of great comics, movies and TV shows lined up to share with you. Whether you are a long-time fan of comic books and comic book movies, or are just getting started, we invite you to join us as we look back at the history of these characters and their stories, as well as attempt to connect the dots from comic panels to moving pictures.
